"Sunfest 2006" Two "Marvelous VocalistS" Mavis Staples and Fort Lauderdales Mary Washington Brooks, I can't encourge enough people to take a chance on the jazz samplings on Sunday. I think sitting out a blanket and just taking it all in might be a great day to spend a sunday afternoon.

Divas Sings the blues @ Cheers
"The second Annual Diva Showcase"was a production of the South Florida Blues Society. The Showcase invites both new and veteran female blues singers to do a few songs. Mary Washington Brooks, dressed like a jazz diva in a basic little red dress and a rhinestone pillbox hat, sang a softer blues, She crooned about standing before her window looking out into the rain,(Ball an Chain). Other instructments joined in with the guitars;a saxaphone out of a detective movie, invoking neon reflected on car metal, brake lights on pools of standing water, and falling in love with loneliness. Washington-Brooks has mastered the jazz singers trick of hitting a note softly and a tad to low, then sliding into key as she turns on the POWER. Washington-Brooks grew up in Sarasota," right next door to a jook joint, "She said, Pause, Smile, " That's a blues bar, honey,"She reassured.
